In Bugya village in Ghana, pregnant women and mothers with children under two years participate in a series of meetings that help decrease risk of depression and manage daily stress. These activities are implemented through the Rural Emergency Health Service and Transport project (REST II), funded by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Background:
Maternal psychological disorders around the time of pregnancy and childbirth have been identified as a key risk factor for poor child development outcomes in growth, cognition, and overall child health in low- and middle-income countries.

CRS is addressing this challenge by supporting pregnant women and mothers with children under two years of age to become more resilient, decrease risk for future depression, and manage daily stressors effectively.

The project activities are implemented in the context of the Rural Emergency Health Service and Transport project (REST II). The project aims to achieve three objectives: (1) increase community knowledge of maternal and child health practices, including the identification of health emergencies; (2) improve access to formal healthcare services for women and children; and (3) improve capacity of health facilities to provide quality healthcare.

REST II is funded by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
